In case you hadn’t noticed, things aren’t great right now. Russia has invaded Ukraine, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee. The images of people trying to escape are tragically reminiscent of World War II.

To add to the fun, yet another variant is taking hold across the globe.

The cost of living is going up everywhere while wages remain stagnant.

Climate change is sharpening its claws, as demonstrated in the devastating floods on the east coast of Australia in the last couple of weeks. We’ve had so many flood emergencies in recent years that I can’t even keep track of them anymore, and we’re not the only ones.

When we go on driving holidays my husband is the kind of person who can’t bear retracing his steps on the return journey. Even if it means going out of his way and adding hours to the trip, he insists on taking another route home. His reasoning is that he’s already ‘been there, done that’ and he wants to see something new.

I’m a bit like this when it comes to books. As an English major I’ve read many of the classics and loved most of them. I’ve also read a lot of popular fiction and have many favourites.

These days I’m pretty fussy with what I enjoy, and it’s getting harder for me to find books I want to finish. I start a lot of new books but get about halfway into them and realise they’re not for me (this may also have to do with my diminishing attention span thanks to technology).

Netflix’s series The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, is a tongue-in-cheek thriller about a woman who thinks she witnesses a terrible crime in the house directly opposite her own.

The story takes aim at recent thrillers such as The Girl on the Train and The Woman in the Window, while at the same time showing a lot of affection for the genre (spoilers ahead).

The title is an instant give-away that the show is not to be taken seriously, but it’s not all parody. This series also wants viewers to have an emotional connection with Anna and empathise with her tragic backstory while at the same time making a joke out of her daughter’s murder at the hands of a serial killer on ‘bring your kid to work day.’
