My Worst Self-Publishing Mistakes (to date)

Today I released my novel Omnisicence to the world (cue trumpets).

This isn’t my first self-publishing rodeo, and after the writing was finished, I thought it would be a relatively easy journey to get to this point.

Sadly, I was wrong.

Here are some of the mistakes I made that you can avoid:

  • Don’t rush your cover design

If you have the software and skills, you can easily design your own cover and alter it as many times as you want. If you’re like me and need help, my advice is to wait until you’ve worked out your marketing strategy before getting a cover design.

My Journey to Omniscience

Like every author today, indie or traditionally published, I find myself in the position of having to pimp my book. For someone who doesn’t use social media much, this is a daunting task. I’m not a complete novice when it comes to publishing, as I self-published some e-books under a pen name, but that was almost a decade ago. I’m sure a lot has changed since then.

I was on the ground floor when Amazon opened the door for ordinary people to reach a mass audience back in 2012. There was a sense of overwhelming excitement at the possibilities opening up at this time, and also panic about missing out on the boom. I wrote a few books in record time between 2012 – 2014.

The Inspiration for My Novel

The plot of my novel Omniscience was inspired by a single scene in a dream I had many years ago. In the dream I was on a train in western Sydney and a transit officer accosted me for not having the right permit for travel. I realised people were only allowed to get off at certain train stations, based on where they lived. This was because the authoritarian government wanted to maintain strict control over the population. I remember feeling sad about all the freedoms that I had always taken for granted and which were now gone.
